Can bed bugs enter your commercial property?

The short answer is yes. Bed bugs in commercial premises are increasingly common. They are tiny and depend on stealth and hitchhiking to spread. They can arrive on clothing, briefcases, hand bags, shoes or in supplier shipments.

How do they get in?

Pinpointing the source is almost always impossible. Even when an infestation looks contained to a single area, it's inappropriate to assign blame — bugs may infest one cubicle while having entered via a nearby workstation, a file shipment, a visitor or a contractor.

Infestations often go undetected in commercial buildings for long periods, and by then can be widespread. Bed bugs avoid well-lit, busy environments and can survive months without feeding. Staff usually don't notice bites until the bugs adapt to daytime feeding, by which point numbers have grown.

In commercial settings there are no obvious "beds" to hide in. Instead, small groups spread through the building — inside seating dividers, under raised floors, behind mouldings, in folders, files, computers and other equipment.

Bed bugs travel by walking or hitchhiking. Studies show they often move in straight lines along seating dividers or wall mouldings, or via underfloor voids. They also spread between floors and buildings on files, boxes or personal items.

Common origin points include kitchens, reception areas, copier and file storage zones, mail rooms, and even cleaning contractors — most commercial cleaning happens at night when bed bugs are most active, and stored equipment such as vacuum cleaners can carry them between sites.

Some commercial items are difficult to treat. Bed bugs have been found inside computers, photocopiers, filing cabinets, telephones and security devices. These often need specialist on-site or off-site heat treatment.
